While finding the most suitable treatment approach may require some experimentation, our team is committed to supporting patients throughout this process, ensuring they receive the most effective treatment for their individual needs.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that often develops during childhood and may continue into adulthood. The precise origins of ADHD have not been identified, but multiple elements are thought to contribute to its development, including:

  • Genetic influences
  • Neurological structure and operations
  • Environmental inputs
  • Prenatal factors

The symptoms of ADHD are commonly split into two main types — inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity:

  • Inattention: Struggles with focusing, prone to distraction, difficulties with task management, a tendency to forget, and making frequent thoughtless mistakes
  • Hyperactivity and impulsivity: Restlessness, problems with remaining stationary, excessive speaking, frequent interruptions of others, and impulsive behavior

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder shaped by a variety of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. While the exact cause remains unclear, there are several risk factors that can increase the chances of developing ADHD:

  • Genetics: A family history of ADHD or other mental health disorders
  • Brain development: Differences in brain structure, particularly areas that control attention and impulse regulation
  • Prenatal factors: Exposure to smoking, alcohol, or drugs during pregnancy
  • Premature birth: Being born too early or with a low birth weight
  • Environmental factors: Early exposure to harmful toxins such as lead
  • Childhood adversity: Stress, trauma, or neglect during early childhood

Recognizing these risk factors can lead to early intervention and better management of ADHD symptoms, improving long-term outcomes for those affected.

Amazing. It's hard to describe Serenity in words, but everyone has been the most amazing, caring, thoughtful (looking for my gratitude words!) and supportive team I have ever had. My final TMS session (2nd ever, and this was a million times better than the first elsewhere) was the day I post this. I will miss being there every day, but I know that I can always reach out. The psychiatrists and support team here are the best, in my opinion. I honestly do not know where I would be right now if my friend didn't tell me about them. I'm so grateful for my friend telling me and all the awesome people in Serenity on and off the phone. I've been to many other places + people before in the country and either I hit the jackpot or found the best group to help with this journey with my friend's own experience. My friend has been with them for some years now, and his experience has helped him so much. Thank you all!! You all mean so much to me. I hope anyone reading will take the opportunity to try Serenity themselves. In my own experience of trying to get better personally, I never thought there was a place like this. Please, try. There's many places out there, but even if you have been to many you think don't fit, try here. It won't hurt and know it's a safe space. I hope it helps as it did for me. I'll see everyone soon! Truly, every day going there was the highlight of my day.

I had a wonderful experience coming to Serenity. I work in the mental health field, and have seen how hard it can be for people to access services, and I was pleasantly shocked at how smooth and quick the process was for me to get an appointment here. Big perk they take my insurnace. Katy McLaughlin was very sweet, easy to talk to, and provided me with a lot of clarity. She really listened to my concerns, points of view, and my needs, and welcomed me into her with a really great first appointment experience. 10/10

I just wanted to give my personal account of Dr. Katy McLaughlin. She was so kind to me in my time of need. If it weren’t for her, I may not be here today. After my insurance changed, I was forced to discontinue my visits. Serenity Mental Health Centers is lucky to have her. I want to wish her and her colleagues a warm thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, so much for your professionalism and kindness.

I cannot rave about Serenity Mental Health Centers enough!! Beth Martin is my provider at the Superior location. We’ve been working together a little over 4 months and I am so grateful to have met her. She’s an excellent, compassionate provider who truly cares about her patients. She’s extremely empathetic and good at what she does. Everyone at that location is wonderful from reception to medical assistants and providers. I also love the staff at the cherry creek location by my home where I do my TMS sessions. My tech Rhonda is just the sweetest woman. So kind and just delightful to see daily. Their receptionists are also equally warm and attentive. I’ve recommended Serenity to all my friends in the area. Keep up the great work!

To gain a holistic view, we may utilize behavioral assessments, interviews, and occasionally tests to exclude other potential conditions. A timely and precise diagnosis is crucial for developing a personalized treatment strategy that caters to the individual's unique requirements.

How can I help my ADHD child at home?

Supporting a child with ADHD takes a thoughtful blend of structure, support, and patience. Start by creating a consistent daily routine with clear expectations to help them stay organized. Breaking tasks into manageable steps can make them feel less daunting, and offering positive reinforcement for each effort or accomplishment can boost their self-confidence. Partnering closely with their teachers can help establish an effective learning environment tailored to your child’s needs. Open communication and empathy are also key; understanding their unique challenges helps you provide meaningful, ongoing support and encouragement as they grow.

Is it possible to manage ADHD without medication?

Yes, managing ADHD without medication is possible, although the success of non-medication strategies can vary. Behavioral therapy is a widely used approach that helps build coping skills, improve organization, and manage impulsive behaviors. Lifestyle adjustments — such as establishing a structured routine, practicing time management, and maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise — can also be beneficial. Support groups provide valuable resources and a sense of community that can be encouraging. For some individuals, combining these strategies offers effective ADHD symptom management. We’re here to help develop a personalized, non-medication approach to meet your unique needs.

Is ADHD a permanent condition?

ADHD typically begins in childhood and can extend into adulthood, but the intensity and effects of its symptoms can fluctuate over time. Some individuals may see their symptoms decrease as they age, while others may need continuous support and management plans throughout their lives.
